PC (Steam), Evercade, Commodore Amiga

Originally conceived as a modern release for the Commodore Amiga before expanding onto the Evercade and Steam, Roguecraft DX is a love letter to the early days of dungeon crawlers. Rather than bloating the loop with complex skill trees, crafting systems, or meta-progression upgrades, Badger Punch Games strips the formula down to its absolute essentials: explore procedurally generated rooms, weigh item risks, outsmart isometric traps, and stay alive.

The premise is straightforwardβ€”descend through 15 floors of the dungeon of Mordecoom, locate the key on each level, and make it to the bottom.

Gameplay & Core Loop

In true classic Rogue fashion, every movement and action operates on a grid-based turn system. Step forward, and every enemy on the board steps with you. Combat is handled by bumping directly into targets, but blindly trading hits will send you back to floor one.

Instead, Roguecraft DX rewards tactical environment management:

  • Trap Exploitation: Leading slithering tentacles or killer chickens into spike pits or flame jets allows you to clear rooms without risking precious health points.
  • Potions & Risk Management: Potions change effects every single run. Outside of standard health flasks, quaffing an unknown liquid might grant temporary elemental powerβ€”or invert your controls and leave you exposed.
  • Temporary Familiars: Caged creatures (such as combat badgers) can be summoned to gather unreachable loot or draw fire, adding short bursts of localized chaos.

Rather than traditional stat tweaking, your chosen hero fundamentally shifts the game’s difficulty and approach:

The Warrior (Easy/Standard): High resilience and straightforward damage make him forgiving for learning mechanics. The Rogue (Medium): Features a “Blink” teleportation ability to slip behind enemies for backstabs, requiring cleaner positioning. The Wizard (Hard): High-range projectile attacks balanced by glass-cannon healthβ€”a single misstep usually ends the run.

    Presentation & Atmosphere

Visually, the game shines with detailed 16-bit isometric pixel art that feels straight out of the classic Amiga era. The enemy design leans into a quirky mix of Lovecraftian cosmic horrorβ€”glowing tentacles and shifting anomaliesβ€”blended with absurd touches like hyper-aggressive mutated chickens.

The audio design complements the art style with a high-energy, chiptune-heavy synth soundtrack that keeps the momentum going during tense room clears.

In Conclusion: Roguecraft DX doesn’t try to reinvent the genre. Instead, it delivers bite-sized, 30-to-40-minute dungeon runs that respect your time. Its combination of quick-session appeal, retro aesthetic, and low price point makes it an ideal pick-up-and-play title for PC handhelds, retro consoles, or short gaming breaks.
