English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran never played video games growing up, something he now thanks his parents for, in part because it helped him pursue other creative avenues, like guitar.
The Mirror UK has published an excerpt from his new book, Ed Sheeran: A Visual Journey, which, among other things, includes a passage about video games.
“We didn’t own a video games console and I honestly think that was one of the best things my mum never did,” he said. “So all the time that my friends were playing Grand Theft Auto, I was sat there practicing the guitar over and over and over again.”
“To this day, I don’t know what to do on an Xbox or a PlayStation.”
Apparently, however, Sheeran now wishes he knew how to play video games so he could join in with his FIFA-playing tour mates.
I wish I could play video games. Was never allowed them when I was younger and now I can only watch my whole touring team play FIFA

Sheeran also reveals that he didn’t have a TV growing up “because my mum didn’t want us to be sat in front of the TV all the time.”
Sheeran has since become an international superstar, touring with Taylor Swift, selling millions of albums, and even writing an original song for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit that is really, really good. His latest record, X, was released in June 2014, featuring hit singles “Sing,” “Don’t,” and “Thinking Out Loud,” among others.
