For the fourth month running, the PlayStation 4 was the top-selling video game system in the United States, followed by the Xbox One (which sold 115,000 units), the NPD Group said today.
As part of its US sales report for April, the NPD Group reported software sales for both next-gen consoles continue to be promising. “Life to date, sales of PS4 and Xbox One hardware have more than doubled the combined sales of PS3 and 360 hardware through their first six months of sales,” the press release issued today states.
“PS4 software combined with Xbox One software sales are up over 40 percent compared to sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 through their first six months,” the report continued. Even software for the beleaguered Wii U, which has struggled since its launch in 2012, was doing better than last year, with year-over-year sales up by more than 80 percent. That’s likely due at least in part to the install base for the system simply being bigger that ever before.
Despite this, overall software sales were down 10 percent to $227.9 million compared with the $254.3 million generated during the same period last year. The NPD points to the launches of games like Injustice: Gods Among Us and Dead Island: Riptide in April 2013 as contributing factors.
In terms of software sales, the NPD report–which only covers new, physical sales at retail–shows Titanfall was the top-selling game for the second month in a row, perhaps thanks in part to its release on the Xbox 360 in April. Following it are a number of games accustomed to being in the top ten, including Call of Duty: Ghosts, NBA 2K14, and Minecraft for Xbox 360.
The full top-ten (which includes collector’s editions and the like, but not software bundled with hardware) follows below:
- Titanfall (360, XBO, PC)
- Call Of Duty: Ghosts (360, PS4, PS3, XBO, NWU, PC)
- NBA 2K14 (360, PS4, PS3, XBO, PC)
- Minecraft (360)
- LEGO The Hobbit (360, PS3, One, PS4, 3DS, NWU, PSV)
- The LEGO Movie Videogame (360, 3DS, PS3, NWU, XBO, PS4, PSV)
- Lego Marvel Super Heroes (360, PS3, NDS, 3DS, PS4, NWU, XBO, PSV, PC)
- The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (PS4, 360, PS3, NWU, 3DS)
- Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)
- Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (360, PS3, PS4, XBO, NWU, PC)
If the top ten didn’t combine sales for all platforms each game is released on, it would look much different, as Yoshi’s New Island, Infamous: Second Son, MLB 14: The Show for PS3, Kinect Sports Rivals, and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare for Xbox 360 would have all made the top ten.
