Midway closed Pitbull Studio after officially acquiring and renaming it in 2007; but as the adage goes you can never keep a good dog down. Robert Troughton, the original co-founder of Pitbull, has opened a new studio to revive the name, reports GamesIndustry.biz. The new development team has reportedly already secured a project.
“The North East [U.K.] has a lot of games development talent,” said Troughton. “It was a very sad day when the old studio closed and it’s really been my dream to revive it. The industry has changed a lot since the day we sold the original Pitbull – it was a real shame that Midway’s management never seemed to move fast enough with the trends. We won’t be making the mistakes of the past with the new studio. What happened there has actually strengthened us, I would say, we’ve learnt a lot from the experience of being part of a large publisher.”
Pitbull (a.k.a. Midway Newcastle) was known for its racing titles, including the Test Drive series, L.A. Rush, and Wheelman. It’s probably a safe bet that the new project is another racing game, so it will be interesting to see how Pitbull adapts to changes in the genre that have developed since its absence.
