Electronic Arts announces Criterion Games at work on new racing game; SimCity due February 2013, Battlefield 3 Armored Kill DLC hits in September.
A new Need for Speed Most Wanted is in development at Burnout studio Criterion Games, Electronic Arts announced today. No further information is available, but the game’s first screenshot (below), hints that it will focus on police chases.
The 2005 original Need for Speed Most Wanted was developed by EA Canada and garnered a warm reception at launch. In that game, players competed to become the most notorious street racer, and were tasked with outrunning other racers as well as police.
No mention was made concerning when Need for Speed Most Wanted will ship or for what platforms, but earlier this month, EA confirmed a new Need for Speed title would arrive during the holiday quarter.
Need for Speed Most Wanted will be the second racing franchise EA has rebooted in as many years, following 2010’s Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. More information on Need for Speed Most Wanted will be divulged at EA’s 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo briefing, slated for June 4 at 1 p.m. PDT.
On top of announcing the new Need for Speed Most Wanted, EA also revealed that SimCity will arrive in February 2013. Previously, the game was scheduled to hit the PC and Mac sometime in 2013. Developer Maxis is building the new SimCity on its new GlassBox game engine. Among other features, this engine will allow the studio to introduce curved roads to the franchise. The game will also be fully 3D, a first for the series.
Lastly, EA today announced that Battlefield 3’s Armored Kill downloadable content will arrive in September. It will follow Close Quarters, which arrives for the PlayStation 3 this month as a one-week timed-exclusive before later releasing for the Xbox 360 and PC.
