Paramount’s sci-fi series boldly returns to retail with a cooperative action game picking up with Kirk and Spock in the wake of 2009’s big-screen blockbuster.

The Star Trek film franchise received new life with J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot of the same name, and now Paramount Digital Entertainment is looking to do the same for the seminal sci-fi series’ game license. Paramount today announced Star Trek is in development for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC with a summer 2012 retail release window. A sequel to the 2009 film is also expected to hit theaters around the same time.

Billed as an action-adventure, Star Trek will feature Kirk and Spock in an original story penned by God of War writer Marianne Krawczyk (with help from the writer-producers of the new movies) and set after the events of the 2009 film. In the story, the Enterprise officers will team up to stop the plans of a powerful enemy pursuing galactic domination.

As for gameplay, Star Trek will carry an emphasis on cooperative play, with Paramount promising a story “filled with action-packed combat.” Development on the title has been entrusted to Digital Extremes (BioShock 2 multiplayer, The Darkness II), with assistance from J.J. Abrams’ development company Bad Robot and the film’s producers.

This will be the second Star Trek game based on J.J. Abrams’ vision of the series. The first, 2009’s downloadable Star Trek: D.A.C., was a top-down, ship-to-ship combat shooter that was not well-received by critics.
