7th Dragon, the Nintendo DS RPG produced by the designer of the original Phantasy Star series, is getting a sequel of sorts, according to the new issue of Japan’s Famitsu magazine. The new game, titled 7th Dragon 2020, is due out on the PSP this fall in Japan, with Sega once again handling publishing duties.

The shift in platforms for the Imageepoch-developed role player series isn’t the only big change. The “2020” in the title comes to play because the new game takes place in Tokyo in the year 2020 — a bit different from the sword-and-sworcery world of the original. The graphic design is also getting a full revamp, with the short, cutesy characters of the original getting a full revamp.

The original 7th Dragon was released March 2009 in Japan, but ultimately failed to receive an official US release. More information on the sequel will be up on the (not yet open) official site in a day or two.
