The game “Rough Justice ’84” was provided to me for thedailygamepad.net at no cost by the game’s developers/publishers. On behalf of thedailygamepad.net, I’d like to thank the developers/publishers for providing us with a free copy of the game to review.
Rough Justice ’84 puts you in the shoes of a private investigator running a security firm on the crime-ridden streets of 1984. You’ll work on a variety of situations, from simple security to repossessions and even locating fugitives. The main gameplay focuses on dice rolling and card management. Each case has certain requirements, and you must assign agents with the necessary talents (represented by dice) to fulfill the task. The dice rolls decide success, giving a dimension of risk and reward that keeps things exciting.
While dice rolls are a fundamental concept, Rough Justice ’84 throws in some twists. Some instances have unique mini-games that put your reflexes, intellect, and code-breaking abilities to the test. These interludes are a wonderful change of pace and add depth to the action.
While Rough Justice ’84 has a strong strategic core, it is not without problems. The reliance on dice rolls can be frustrating at times, especially when a run of bad luck disrupts your plans. The user interface might occasionally feel clumsy, particularly when handling a large number of agents.
The game can be unforgiving at times. There is no actual handholding, and the tutorial presents a lot of information at once. Trial and error are an important part of the learning process, and some players may find this technique overwhelming.
Now, I enjoy being able to play Rough Justice ’84 on a Nintendo Switch Lite. I enjoyed being able to sit up in bed and play the game in portable mode. However, while playing Rough Justice ’84 on a Nintendo Switch Lite, I’ve discovered that the writing is sometimes too small to read and causes eye strain. Now, this may not be an issue for people playing on a Nintendo Switch that can be connected to a television, but bear in mind that there is no option to increase the size of the text, so it is quite small. Fortunately, the game includes narration, but if you are relying on reading only, it is challenging to see on the Nintendo Switch Lite’s screen.
Overall, Rough Justice ’84 provides a strategic gaming experience unlike many others on the Switch. The 80s look is well-executed, and the diverse cases keep things interesting. However, it is not without problems. The user interface might be clumsy at times, particularly in handheld mode. Furthermore, the reliance on dice rolls can also result in frustrating periods where victory is dependent on luck rather than pure strategy.
If you want to play Rough Justice ’84 for yourself, it is available on all platforms. You can get it for the Nintendo Switch from the Nintendo eShop, the PC from Steam, the PS4 and PS5 from the PlayStation Store, and even the Xbox One and XBOX Series X|S from the Xbox Games Store for $19.99. Rough Justice ’84 is a stylish strategy game with a unique blend of gameplay and a distinct 80s flavor. However, if you become easily frustrated by unforeseeable elements or like fast-paced action, you might want to look elsewhere.
