Over the past few years, tower defense games have seen a resurgence. With this being said, it takes a lot to stand out in the genre. Anomaly: Warzone earth takes a unique approach to mostly great results.
In the year 2018, what initially appears to be a comet crashes into Baghdad with seismic force. Just like that, Earth has been invaded.
To stand out, games need to innovate and add new features to tried and true styles. I can happily say Anomaly: Warzone Earth adds a new feature that really helps the gameplay. That is power-ups. Fog, decoy units, and unit repairs help shake up the gameplay.
However there are a couple hiccups. There are not many unique units in the game, compared to similar games. In most scenarios you can win a game by just upgrading a few crawlers and have a shield unit accompany them.
The AI itself is actually very good. Computer opponents guard key places, and generally attack what is logically correct. Visually, for a downloadable title it is beautiful. The trees sway when a airborn vehicle flys overhead, and dust appears when landing. These little details give Anomaly a visual appeal not found in most downloadable titles.
After completing the campaign you can unlock new modes to extend gameplay. A survival mode is my favorite type of mode personally, but there are plenty of modes for all types of players.
Overall, Anomaly: Warzone Earth is a great RTS/Tower Defense game, that will satisfy the urge. The price is right at 800 MS points, so, check this out if you are into the genre. You will not be disappointed.
