Suda 51 isn’t a genius (topic for another day…), but he sure as hell knows how to express HIS visions and coat them with a few layers of his personality; which just so happens to be a really interesting one. What I saw mechanically of Lollipop Chainsaw was nothing out of the ordinary for 3rd person character action games. In fact, it’s so standard for the genre the topic will not see another sentence of this impression. Yet, I walked away from my hands-on demo with Lollipop Chainsaw as one of my favorites from 2012′s PAX showings. How?
C’mon guys, this game centers around a sexy, bad ass, chainsaw-wielding cheerleader who’s protecting her high school by combo-decapitating the walking dead; and if that’s not good enough, the talking head of her boyfriend is a close companion. Morbid, yet silly, entertainingly different, and fun.
Suda IS the Tarentino of video games. Much like Quentin, how he makes opposite tones match and his ability to capture his personality in an art form is what makes me a fan of their work. Lollipop Chainsaw isn’t a departure from what Suda does – as far as I could tell from my demo – and that’s what’s most important to me as far as Grasshopper games go. Action-brawler fans should be excited, this games sure to be one hell of a ride.
