While MMOs aren’t the most popular genre for the industry, they are still very relevant; especially when Bioware decides to make one. If you haven’t been reading game blogs outside of WouldYouKindly, the Knights of the Old Republic franchise has moved from a single-player RPG to a large-universe based MMORPG. The Old Republic isn’t the only MMO that’s on the market so let’s get into some news.
Aion Goes Free-to-Play Next Week
Aion, the popular MMO went free-to-play in Europe on February 28th. Those who have already purchased subscription time will be given 6 Aion Coins each in-game day as compensation for money already spent towards a subscription. There’s no official US date, but it will be coming in the Spring. For more details and information on the change, check out the official website.
The Original ‘Everquest’ Goes Free-to-Play
Launched almost 13 years ago, Everquest will be going free-to-play for its anniversary. Sony Online Entertainment’s first MMO has eighteen separate expansion packs. For new players, it is unknown if all the content will be available; on March 16th, players will enter the MMO free of charge for the first time. A new Everquest titled ‘EverQuest Next’ is in the works and doesn’t have a release window as of yet. For more details, check out the official announcement page.
Guild Wars 2 Public Beta Sign-Ups Closed with One Million Players
Sign-ups closed mid-afternoon on the 24th, and one million players have signed up. The development team shared their excitement for player’s enthusiasm through a tweet. For those who didn’t get into the first beta, there will be future Guild Wars 2 beta events; so don’t worry about not getting your hands on the game before its official release. As testing proceeds, more and more people will be invited into the beta, so when Arena.Net needs more, they’ll be sure to let you all know.
DC Universe Online Gets 10th Update
With some general updates, DC Universe Online continues to receive support from their fan base after four months of being free-to-play, and the third pack of DLC titled “The Battle for Earth” will soon be available. For a full breakdown on the update, you can check the Sony Forums post here.
