For the benefit of transparently we (at TheDailyGamepad) were given a code for coverage for Legacy of Kain: Ascendance on Steam for the sake of this review. We humbly thank Crystal Dynamics and all of the wonderful PR in helping with this review. Let us begin!

As of its release on March 31, 2026, Legacy of Kain: Ascendance has become one of the most polarizing entries in the storied Nosgoth saga. Developed by Bit Bot Media and published by Crystal Dynamics, the game takes a radical departure from the series’ 3D action-adventure roots, opting for a 2D retro-style action platformer.

While the return of voice legends Simon Templeman (Kain) and Michael Bell (Raziel) provides a much-needed sense of authenticity, the game’s narrative and mechanical shifts have sparked intense debate among the fanbase.

A New Perspective on Nosgoth

The most immediate change in Ascendance is its visual and mechanical identity. The game utilizes a high-fidelity pixel art style for gameplay, interspersed with anime-influenced cinematics and hand-painted character portraits. This 2D shift focuses heavily on verticality and “vampiric” movement. Players navigate fractured timelines, moving between the era of the Sarafan Inquisitors and the decay of Kain’s future empire. While the art is striking, some critics have noted a “cartoonish” disconnect between the character sprites and the traditionally grim, oppressive atmosphere of the series.

The Introduction of Elaleth

The narrative’s most controversial element is the introduction of Elaleth, Raziel’s sister (a character adapted from the The Dead Shall Rise comic). As a playable protagonist alongside Kain and Raziel, Elaleth acts as a “shadow manipulator” throughout the timeline. The game attempts to retcon her into pivotal moments—such as being the one who suggests Raziel show his wings to Kain, directly leading to his execution. For many fans, this feels like “fan-fiction” that diminishes the agency of the original icons, while others appreciate the new perspective on Raziel’s human past.

Gameplay Mechanics and Combat

Ascendance features three distinct playstyles:

  • Kain: Focuses on brutal, supernatural strength and vampiric spells.
  • Raziel: Swaps between his human Sarafan form, his winged vampire form, and his wraith form.
  • Elaleth: Offers a high-speed, aggressive offense focused on relentless strikes. The “Blood Hunger” mechanic returns, requiring vampire characters to constantly feed to maintain health, adding a layer of urgency to the combat. However, reviews have been mixed regarding the stiff controls and “janky” flight mechanics, which some feel don’t live up to the precision of modern 2D masterpieces.

Technical Performance and Scope

On a technical level, the game is highly optimized for modern hardware, including the Steam Deck, where it runs at a locked 60 FPS with minimal battery drain. Despite the smooth performance, the game is notably short, with a standard playthrough lasting roughly 3 to 4 hours. This brevity, combined with a lack of mid-level auto-saves, has been a significant point of frustration for players accustomed to the sprawling exploration of Soul Reaver

The Verdict: A Fragmented Legacy

Ultimately, Legacy of Kain: Ascendance feels like an experiment in “retro-revival” that doesn’t quite land its leap. It succeeds in reuniting a world-class voice cast and delivering a haunting original score by Celldweller, but it struggles under the weight of its own lore. By attempting to fill the gaps between Blood Omen and Soul Reaver with a new central protagonist, it risks alienating the “LoK” purists who have waited over two decades for a return to Nosgoth. It is a bold, if flawed, attempt to keep the flame of the Scion of Balance flickering.
