Developed by Vladmir Beletsky and Mikhail Shvachko and published by Vladmir Beleskey, The Mooseman is an indie adventure, that is both visually breathtaking and has a good narrative to it. The Mooseman was already available on Steam but is now making its debut onto the consoles on July 18, 2018. I would like to take this time to thank Vladmir Beletsky for providing me with a free copy of the Steam version of the game. It is because of Vladmir, I can provide you all with this review.
In The Mooseman, you play as The Mooseman, a shaman that can see what we can not see. On this Journey with The Mooseman you solve puzzles and learn of the folklore for the Perm chud’ Tribe. Every time, you pass a totem it will give you some new myth about the tribe. One of the things I would have like to see is that the myth would automatically populate on the screen, instead of having to go into the pause screen to read the myth. It’s not a big issue for me, but I think it would have been nice. You also must find artifacts and by doing so the game also tells you what the artifact represents to the tribe. As I am someone who enjoys learning about other cultures and their folklore, it was one of the things that really drew me to the game. As you go through the game, you do have to solve puzzles to progress, and the puzzles were relatively easy. However, at the same time I was okay with the puzzles being easy, because to me the game doesn’t want you to focus too much on the puzzles. It’s clear that the game is about educating you on the folklores of the Perm chud’ Tribe.
The artwork has a simplicity style to it. However, that does not take away from the folklores. In fact, I am in love with the artwork for this game. I imagine that this is the artwork I would see if I was watching a documentary series or even a cartoon series that tells the stories. Although, the game does offer the puzzles, I would say to me it feels more like a hybrid between a visual novel and a puzzle type game. The reason is you do a lot of reading in the game.
In terms of the controls in the game you can use the keyboard and gamepad. The controls for the keyboard are relatively simple. You use A and D or left and right arrows to move forward or backwards. Tapping either key twice puts you into an autorun. The Spacebar is the key you use constantly to interact with. The Gamepad controls are simple, however one of the things I did notice during my play through is that the gamepad controls do not show up, even when you have engaged with the gamepad on the game. It will show you the defaulted keyboard controls. Therefore, just be warn you may have to figure out what button on the gamepad does what in the game. Although, the layout is self-explanatory and is easy. Just to make things even easy for you all: A button is how you Interact/switch between the worlds, B button – You can use an alternative ability, directional pad or analog stick moves your character . So again, as I stated the game is all about keeping things simple and easy. I will admit that the game is a little short if you are looking at it from a game’s perspective. However, if you are looking at this from the aspect of a visual novel, like I have; I will say that it’s is the perfect amount of time to get through all the reading you must do.
The game does offer fifteen achievements for the game, and if you follow the story you won’t miss any of them. Therefore, if you are an achievement hunter, this is one of the easier games to get the achievements for. The game also offers Steam Trading cards for those who like to collect the trading cards.
Overall, I really enjoyed The Mooseman and do recommend it if you are looking for a game that is really relaxing and enjoy reading about other cultures and are into Folklores. This is a game that you can enjoy as in in between type game. If you would like to experience The Mooseman for yourself you can do so by purchasing the game from Steam, PS4, XBONE, and Nintendo Switch for the lovely price of $6.99 USD.
