Microsoft has announced a new name for its Xbox Music service, titled Groove. The service will be released with Windows 10 PCs from July 29. Groove costs $9.99 a month, or $99 for a yearly subscription, which grants access to “one of the largest catalogs on the planet” without advertisements. Songs can be streamed or downloaded for listening offline.
Xbox One owners can use the app to listen to music while playing a game, though this is currently only achievable using the Snap feature. This takes up some space on the screen, making it a less-than-ideal solution. Head of Xbox Phil Spencer has said in the past that a feature which allows for music to be played in the background will not be delivered until Windows 10 integration for the Xbox One is completed.
Meanwhile, competitor Sony currently has PlayStation Music, a service which was launched by Spotify in March this year. The Spotify-PlayStation app replaced Music Unlimited, and is available to download for free on the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and Xperia mobile devices.
Groove can only be accessed with a paid subscription to the service; the free version of the app was axed in December last year. Users are still able to access a free 30-day trial to the service.
