High school? What a drag. A Monster High School where I get to go to a Monster Prom? Well then, sign me up!

Developed by Beautiful Glitch and published by Those Awesome Guys, Monster Prom is a dating sim like no other dating sim I have encounter before. I had been looking forward to playing this game since I seen the trailer for it.

Therefore, I was a little more than a bit excited when I was given a free copy of Monster Prom to play for this review. I mean you’re courting a monster and who doesn’t want to do that?!

You start off the game by choosing a short game, which is 3 weeks long (30 minutes for us humans) or a full game which is 6 weeks long (about an hour for us humans.) You can also select to do voice overs or to read them on your own and give your own voice overs. However, selecting with voiceovers didn’t really have them reading the dialogue, just added some sound effects into the game, and the occasional line being said. So, I recommend doing your own voice overs.

After selecting your gameplay length and whether you want to use sound effects or not; you then come to select from four different characters to play as. “Yellow” – who is a phantom of some sort, “Red “– A fiery red head, “Green” – who appears to be what looks like a zombie, and “Blue” – who is a much cuter version of Frankenstein’s monster.

The game does offer up to four players local co-op as well as online multiplayer co-op. At the time of the review the game was having some issues with the online multiplayer co-op. I give big kudos to Beautiful Glitch for letting the players know that there were some bugs for online, that might cause the game to drop and that they are currently working on the issue. I have a lot of respect for developers who keep their players in the loop when it comes to their games.

Another thing with online co-op is that you have the have a code to join a game.  Which I do like that if I’m playing with friends of mine, so that I know that no one else is going to join in the game. However, in the future, I would love to see a quick play feature for the game in which someone can set up a room and you just randomly go into the room without a code to play with others. Well, at least we got online multiplayer though.

For my play through, I end up going solo and I immediately choose “Blue” and rename her, because that is something that the game allows you to do. You can keep the name “Blue”, change to a name the game gives you (in my game “Blue” was called “Vicky)”, or you can give them a customize name; which because I am known for naming my characters in video games I select customize name and name her “Trip”.

Another cool feature of the game; you can select your pronoun. You can select he, she, or they; which is an interesting feature that I am seeing being adding more and more now-a-days to games. Therefore, you could pick a female avatar and be called he and vice versa.

Once you select your character, then we get to meet our six suitors. Miranda – A Mermaid Princess, Damien – who looks like hell boy, Scott – A jock werewolf with a big heart, Liam – The hipster vampire, Polly – the partying ghost, and Vera – A gorgon who must be related to Quark from Deep Space Nine because she’s all about money.

For my first initial play through, I decided I was going to go after Scott, because well he’s a werewolf and just look at that face. He’s just so adorable looking. I just want to pet him and eat him up.

So now that I’m done Fan Girling over Scott and how adorable he is. Let’s get back to the review.

Once you meet your suitors you then must take a magazine quiz, because that is what high school is all about – magazine quizzes. Well, what this quiz does it helps you get your attributes for your game which are Smarts, Boldness, Creativity, Charm, Fun, and Money. As well, as give you brownie points towards one of the six suitors.

Once you do your quiz and get your attributes, it’s off to the campus with you. I say campus because you can choose to be productive or hey you can even choose to skip class.

Each week you will go through three different time frames: Morning, Noon (which is always lunchtime), and Evening. Upon going through the three different phases and depending on where you choose to go to or sit, you will have encounters with our six suitors.

The dialogue alone between the characters is just down right hilarious in my opinion. There is a lot of dirty humor and I like the dirty humor in the game.  Before anyone gets wide eyed please know that each of the monsters are well over age, I mean Liam is over 400 years old as he is a vampire, and he even makes a reference to this in one of the courses of the game.

A lot of the time you will have to settle an argument between the suitors and depending on which monster suitor you want to go after, you want to pick the response that is going to put you in their good graces.

You may think you can get away with not being in their good graces, but it will greatly help you if you are in their good graces. Also, Monster Prom isn’t a game you can just simply choose whatever and I like that it makes you think. You do have to read the text and select accordingly and sometimes even when you select accordingly, it still may not be enough to get into the monster of your dreams good graces – Curse Liam for turning me down not once but twice, I will keep trying until you say yes. Determination +10 –

When all fails you can always go shopping with this shady cat who has questionable items for you to buy.  You do have to playthrough multiple times to open additional items in her shop, but some of the items you can purchase are a fake tattoo, motivational posters, and some of the items lead to other events in the game. In my game, I could buy a sheet with two holes in it and it started a chain of events in the game.

I do like the option of having to choose between a short gameplay and a long gameplay as well.  What makes me like the options between short and long play is that; if I don’t have a lot of time but want to get a quick game in, I have the option and if I want to enjoy the game even more then I can. However, playing both ways for me were both satisfying. Although, the shorter gameplay does tend to go by a lot faster (I finished it in about 20 minutes) the longer gameplay does make up for it, by sticking closer to it’s estimated time of an hour.

The game has a lot of room for replay value, as there are six suitors and achievements involved, it will keep you coming back to play more and more. However, if you are one that likes to go for trading cards, Monster Prom does not have the feature. Maybe in a future update they could add the trading cards to the game, but as of right now that feature is not available. In the future, I am going to see if I can get others to play along with me. Just because there looks to be additional questions that are asked during multiplayer gameplay that also give attributes to your character, plus I think this would be a great game to play along with friends.

Overall, I highly recommend picking up and playing Monster Prom. I really enjoyed the game play for the game, even if Liam keeps rejecting me -soon Liam my sweet soon– and well at least I did court Scott. If you want to experience the monster dating scene you can pick up a copy of Monster Prom for the lovely price of $11.99 USD on Steam .
