Developed by Team Gotham, Solo is a remarkable indie adventure game that will have you thinking not only about the puzzles in the game, but about things in your actual love life.
Now, it should be known that I was giving a free copy of the game to play for writing this review and I can honestly say this game left me speechless and in deep thought.
Solo, is a game that challenges the player with analyzing your own life as well as with its puzzles. In the start of the game you are asked to play the game based on your own life and beliefs, which I thought was a great concept to the game. You can choose to play as a female, male, or non-binary. In the same token you can choose the same three as your beloved.
Once you pick your gender and whom you love; the game starts, and you are sent to a nearby island to converse with the totem of that island, but before you do all that. You should take a selfie!
No, that’s not a misprint. The game has a very interesting feature that allows for you to take selfies and upload them to twitter. I did not get a chance to play around with the feature to see how well it performs, but I did like that this feature was include in the game. I think this is good on the developer’s part as it will allow for players to get others interested in the game from seeing the players tweets.
Once you’re done taking selfie’s then you head off to the nearby island in which you are told the story of how you got here. As to not spoil the story I won’t mention much of the story here. Then you come to your first lighthouse that activates the first totem. The totem then asks you a question in pertains to love and your views on it. Each island holds one of these totems and each question causes the player to really look and analyzes their own beliefs when it comes to love.
While playing this I found myself really asking myself the questions that were being asked from the totems, and even carefully thinking about my responses to the questions. So much that it took me literally 15 minutes to answer one of the questions that was posed by the totem, because I simply had never thought about it before.
The game is beautifully designed and has the music to match, which draws you into the game. When it comes to the controls it does support gamepad as well as keyboard and mouse. Although, the game was designed to be played with gamepad and it shows it by favoring the gamepad. Still, it is nice to know that the keyboard and mouse is still an option for those that are not fully sold on playing with gamepad.
However, it should be known that any luck of going into options to peek at the controls ahead of playing the game is a no go; as there is no option for controls in the options menu. The only time you can see the controls is when the game loads up and depending on if you have a gamepad plugged into your pc it will give you the controls for the gamepad. The only way to see the controls for keyboard and mouse is to unplug the gamepad from the pc before starting the game. It will then show you the controls for keyboard and mouse and take the time to remind you that the best way to experience the game is to play with gamepad. I will admit that the keyboard and mouse controllers are a little clunky, and I did enjoy playing it with the gamepad. It would have been nice of the developers to have an alternative then unplugging the gamepad from the PC to see keyboard and mouse controls. If you have the gamepad plugged in and click on the mouse button to activate keyboard and mouse, it flashes the controls for a moment before cutting to the game.
Another thing that bothered me a bit with the game is the load times. The first initial load up of the game it did seem to take it a little long to boot up. However, when I continue the game it loads up rather quickly and sometimes a little too quickly causing you to miss valuable information (as explain with the controls map layout.) Then again these were just minor details for me, because the first initial load up is worth it once you see how beautiful and peaceful the game is.
For those of you who are achievements hunters and trading card collectors you will be happy to know that Team Gotham has offer both features in Solo. If you’re not an achievement hunter or trading card collector, you will still find great enjoyment with Solo.
Solo is due to be released on April 26th, 2018 and will be available on Steam and Humble Bundle for the price of $14.99 USD. I highly recommend this game even at the $14.99 USD price. Since the storyline causes you to think and gets deep. If the storyline alone doesn’t get you then the puzzles will. Overall, purchasing this game will not leave you feeling disappointed.
