Following the trailers that debuted earlier this week, Fox has released an even bigger, two-minute trailer for the upcoming season of The X-Files, the show’s first in almost a decade and a half.
This gives us the best impression yet of what the new event series (essentially, a shorter-than-usual tenth season) will be about. It appears to center around an impending takeover by a “multinational group of elites” making use of alien technology.
The group sounds reminiscent of the one from the original series called the Syndicate, though this new season looks as if it may focus less on the alien invasion that was scheduled to take place in 2012. It remains to be seen how the show will reconcile the invasion date having passed or if it will, like the 2008 movie I Want to Believe, gloss over aspects of the story from the show’s last two seasons.
The trailer features new footage alongside chunks of previously released trailers, teasers, and the original show (specifically, the season three episode “Paper Clip”). We also get a glimpse of a new character who comes to Fox Mulder to enlist his help; he describes himself as a “true believer” like Mulder. And, like a trailer earlier this week, it closes out with a statement by the illusive Smoking Man, who apparently has more lives than a cat.
The upcoming event series is set to debut on Fox on January 24, 2016, nearly 14 years after the TV series concluded its ninth season. Many of the key cast members from the original series return, including David Duchovny (Fox Mulder), Gillian Anderson (Dana Scully), Mitch Pileggi (Walter Skinner), and William B. Davis (The Smoking Man).
