Describing a game is more so relating it to anything released prior for some feels like a crime. Or suggestive to saying it has no merit on its own. However to really break down this game is to pull back to mention games reminds me of, and go from there. Doom one of the key names that pop out. Even some of the Build engine games such as Duke Nukem 3D can be tossed into the fey due to the manual allowance of spamming smack talk to enemies as you slay them playfully. Surprisingly this game is presented in a classic style within the Unreal 4 engine. Which actually was impressive as the PC I tried this on was my moderate machine. Running super well and optimized. Before I go any deeper lets go over the story.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a loud, obnoxious, and damned fun retro shooter | Ars Technica

The story of Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun is a typical example of a throwback shooter, where a single character must overcome insurmountable obstacles in order to avert impending tragedy. It frequently takes a person of similarly extraordinary strength and talent, like our Sternguard Veteran Space Marine, to triumph against the seemingly impossible. You rush through groups of enemies, about it.

Beyond that you feel this sort of vibe from Doom 2016(if you played that). Collectables flying out of Pink Terrors, mowing down enemies with your Chainsword, the rush of tackling through a stage with the blare of excellent music over your head and around thy ears. Everything hand-brushed down with the retro looking vibe to the games impressively well constructed Unreal 4 engine in this one. Wows, and awes came from my mouth when playing my way through the depths of this game so much so its on my list of some of the best games of the year for 2023. Next to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which I enjoy on my own personal stream, and in my own spare time. If kicking Chaos ass is up your alley, or just love the Warhammer franchise as I am growing more and more in love with as these pretty solid games peer out, Boltgun is the real deal. Check out the Video above to see the vod for my tackle through the game and my first impressions.
