Warframe developer Digital Extremes is set to be acquired by massively multiplayer online games company Perfect World and Sumpo, a chicken meat products supplier.

According to a document from Sumpo, the companies entered a “non-binding term sheet” on June 30, 2014, and are now “conducting due diligence investigations over the affairs of Digital Extremes.” Basically, Sumpo and Perfect World are finalizing the deal and Digital Extremes agreed not to solicit other offers in the meantime.

Some Warframe players are already objecting to the acquisition, fearing that Perfect World’s involvement will have a negative impact on how the game is monetized. Users on the /r/Warframe subreddit are trying to organize a temporary boycott of the game, and at the time of writing a Change.org petition had already gathered 4,700 signatures urging Digital Extremes not to sell to Perfect World.

“You may have read something about the business development side of Digital Extremes and it may have you concerned,” Digital Extremes Video Game Director Steve Sinclair said on the game’s forums. “For legal reasons, we can’t disclose specifics but if you know the history of Warframe you’d know that we are intent on having Warframe’s design remain in the hands of Digital Extremes. Yes, opportunities will arise for us but the game itself is and will remain a labor of love.”

Currently free-to-play on PC and PlayStation 4, Warframe is set to launch on Xbox One later this year.
