Following his recent announcement that the upcoming Warcraft movie will have a lot of CGI, director Duncan Jones has now spoken out to generally defend CGI as a movie-making tool.
“I hear this ‘CGI in film sucks,’ mantra again & again,” Jones said on Twitter. “It doesn’t. It’s a tool like any other. It can be done well & it can be done sh**.”
“The best CGI has you forgetting its CGI, and accepting the visual as whatever it is supposed to be,” he added. “Like props. No one has an issue with ‘props’ in film, do they?”
The Warcraft movie will blend live-action with CGI. The CGI scenes are being done by award-winning Star Wars effects studio Industrial Light & Magic. Recently, Jones said the Warcraft movie fits “somewhere between Planet of the Apes, Fellowship of the Ring, and Avatar” as it relates to its use of CGI.
The Warcraft movie was originally scheduled to launch December 16, 2015, but was delayed after Disney announced that Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens would also be released on that day. The movie is now slated to come to theaters in March 2016.
