Developed and published by MegaCat Studios, Coffee Crisis is a soon to be released beat ‘em up indie game, that pays tribute to all the other beat ‘em up games from the past. I have been looking for an indie game that could take me back to the nostalgia of Streets of Rage for quite some time now. I am more than happy to say that I have found that common ground with Coffee Crisis.

Players can select from Ashley or Nick, two baristas’; who from the storyline don’t care for country music but do have a love for dealing out pain with the use of a coffee mug or weapons you find around.  The game offers 4 different modes easy, medium, metal, and death.  I first played the game on easy mode with the use of the keyboard and it did provide a challenge. Luckily, you can also use gamepad with this and I highly recommend that you do.

For the most part game play is straight forward, it’s just your typical beat ‘em up game.  Although there is no tutorial, the controls are simply enough to pick up on gamepad. If you still want to know the controls, I recommend going through options to look at the control settings and if it isn’t to your liking, make the according changes. It does however go over some of the controls during the game, but if you are anxious to play and you moved fast and are unable to see what does what, I recommend going to the options to look at the gamepad layout.

The game does offer a local co-op feature. However, I am unable to test how co-op works as I usually play solo, but I will imagine if it’s co-op plays anything like solo play, then you and your partner are up for a great challenge. I do love their snark remarks and their references to some country music. Which leads me to the next order of business for me when it comes to games; the music.  I really loved this soundtrack and with these types of games, having a great soundtrack is a must. If the music is good or decent I can keep playing for hours.  The music pulled me in and many of times I had issues with wanting to stop playing the game. Every time, I told myself I would stop playing; I found another reason to play. The game to me was just that addicting, where it keeps pulling you back into play more and more.

Like many, I am an achievement hunter when it comes to playing games on Steam. For those of you who are also achievements hunters as well as trading cards enthusiasts, you will be glad to know that Coffee Crisis offers both achievements and trading cards for Steam.  Which if the game not being good doesn’t pull you back in time and time again, the collecting the achievements as well as trading cards should do the trick.

The game does offer both Twitch and Mixer integration; which allows your viewers to vote on four different mod changes, that occur in the game. As I had the luxury of streaming this game on twitch, I do like the twitch integration, but will admit that it just needs a bit of tweaking. Sometimes, due to the delay of stream; viewers are not able to get their votes in early enough. Therefore, by time some viewers see that they can vote, the voting period has ended. Another thing is that viewers were voting but however the game was not registering that the viewers had voted.

I would love if there was a timer you could add to increase the amount of time for voting or even a way for the chatbot to announce that voting has begun, so that viewers can actively cast their vote for the mod change as it is occurring in the game.

Also, it would be nice to know what each mod was they were voting for. Ideally, there are just four icons but as of right now there’s no way to tell what is being voted for. Your viewers are just picking a random icon at will. Which does make the game interesting for the player. Some of the mods are screen changes to the game, an eagle overload, and an alien spaceship that shoots enemies just to name a few.

Overall, I will say that the game was very enjoyable and is worth looking into and adding to your Wishlist on Steam if you are playing on PC. It is due out on Steam anywhere from Late April 2018 to Early May 2018. If you can’t wait that long to play and want a physical copy; you can purchase a Sega Genesis or Mega Drive cartridge directly from MegaCat Studios website for the price of $49.99. If you choose the later option and share it on Facebook, you can get an additional 10 percent off the game taking the price down to $45.00.

She has been gaming for 30+ years; and feels that a lot of indie games go back to the games that she grew up with and aren't afraid to think outside of the box to make a game. It is because of this thought process that she prefers to play a majority of indie titles, but still likes to play Triple-A titles and Retro games too. She enjoys searching through itch.io platform and looking for games that are stream friendly, and then playing them on stream to get them the exposure they may not be getting.
