City-building series returning next year on Xbox 360, PC, Mac, and Linux; will be set during different eras and feature multiplayer.
Kalypso Media today announced Tropico 5, the latest entry in the long-running city-building series. The game will release in 2014 on Xbox 360, PC, Mac, and Linux and is in development at Bulgarian outfit Haemimont Studios.
Tropico 5 will see the return of main character El Presidente and is said to include a “whole host” of new gameplay features that take the series in a new direction with a new Dynasties feature.
Gamers can appoint members if their extended family to leadership positions, like ambassador or supreme ruler, earning skills and experience along the way.
As El Presidente, players will control the island of Tropico during early colonial times and then guide it through the ensuing centuries. Players must survive both World Wars, the Great Depression, and Cold War, modern times, and beyond.
Tropico 5 is set between the 19th and 21st centuries and features a themed art style to match specific moments in time. The game also introduces a series-first cooperative and competitive multiplayer mode for up to four players, though no further details were provided.
The most recent entry in the island adventure series was 2011’s Tropico 4, which arrived first on PC before later coming to Xbox 360. An expansion–Modern Times–arrived in early 2012 and featured a new campaign set after the main game.
