THQ announced today that they’ll be opening a new studio in Montreal, and they’ve hired recently departed Ubisoft developer Patrice Désilets to run the studio and spearhead its hiring.
Désilets, for those unfamiliar with the name, was a major player at Ubisoft, where during his 13 years at the developer he served as the creative director on The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, as well as on the Assassin’s Creed series. Désilets will be tasked with hiring for his own development team at THQ’s new studio, as well as hiring for a second team that will be housed in the studio as well. The first project for Désilets’ team will be a new IP.
In an “open letter” sent to Kotaku following THQ’s announcement this morning, Désilets wrote that, “I am very eager to start working on new games, but for various reasons and mostly out of respect for those who gave me my first chance in the industry, I will not be working on any projects until Summer of 2011.” Désilets left Ubisoft just before E3 back in June after finishing work on Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, so it’s possible that in addition to staying quiet until summer out of “respect,” he may also be contractually obligated to under the agreement of his resignation.
