On this day in 1995, exactly 15 years ago, Sony’s original PlayStation console was launched in the United States, birthing what many would consider the modern era of home videogames.

The PlayStation had already been available in Japan for some nine months by that point, causing many early adopters to simply import the system from expensive mailorder companies, but that didn’t hurt the U.S. launch, as many retailers reported day-one sellouts.
