In this Live Stream, Ready Set Indie Games plays Chained Echoes on PC.

Dragons and piloted mechanical suits are equally frequent in the fantasy setting of Chained Echoes, a 16-bit style role-playing game.

I admit that the game pulled me in from the moment I began playing. I had the luxury of streaming this game on my channel, and the game’s story was so captivating that I was unable to talk to my chat. That’s how roped into the story I was. As to keep this spoiler free, I won’t mention too much of the story or at least keep it down to a minimum. The game starts off with you playing as Glenn, a Sky Armor pilot who is with his mercenary team The Bull Iron as they try to destroy what is known as the Odus Stone. After the prologue, you are then thrust into a year after the incident.

The one thing I like about Chained Echoes is that it has multiple characters in the game. I will admit they do introduce characters rather quickly, but it is done in a tasteful matter that it doesn’t matter that they introduce the characters so quickly. At the beginning of the game, I was introduced to four new characters in the span of about 30-45 minutes, but each of the playthroughs for the characters was interesting and although at times it feels like a slow build, I see that the playthroughs are necessary to build the story.

The graphics are 16-bit and I can appreciate a good nod to the RPGs of old. I think the graphics are what happened to help draw me into the gameplay of the game. As soon as I saw the beginning of the game I was automatically intrigued and as I played on I became more and more engrossed in the game. I’m from a generation where 16-bit games were fantastic and so this game definitely brings up nostalgia for me as a game that could have easily been on the SNES and/or Sega Genesis.

When it comes to the controls for the game, they are pretty solid. I played the game on PC which allows you to use the keyboard as well as Controller. I choose to play with Controller as it just felt more like a controller game for me. I would like to point out that I did have an issue with the Menu UI during the battle. I thought I was simply attacking but I was, in fact, using skills and it would be nice if there were no sub-menu when you go to attack and that it remained blank so as not to spend up the TP that is used for Skills. Luckily you can replenish TP by smacking an enemy a few times.

The soundtrack is another thing that pulled me in. I love chiptunes and again I feel that the soundtrack hit me in the nostalgia feels as well. Everything about this game just keeps me entertained and in fact, I am still playing it off-stream, which is very rare for me. I tend to play games on stream only, but this one makes you want to enjoy it off-stream. You can definitely see the love and dedication that went into Chained Echoes and I highly recommend it for those who are looking for a love letter to RPGs from the 90s.

Ready Sets Gaming is a variety streamer on Twitch with a love and passion for indie games. She has been gaming for 30+ years; and feels that a lot of indie games go back to the games that she grew up with and aren't afraid to think outside of the box to make a game. It is because of this thought process that she prefers to play a majority of indie titles, but still likes to play Triple-A titles and Retro games too. She enjoys searching through itch.io platform and looking for games that are stream friendly, and then playing them on stream to get them the exposure they may not be getting. Some of her favorite game genres include Platformers, Puzzlers, Role-Playing and she's recently developed a loved for Shmups.
