I’ll keep this intro short and sweet, since you’re just here for the funny pictures anyway: these are my picks for the worst video game magazine covers ever published. I am no layout expert, but I do own at least a couple thousand of these things, which I guess makes me something of an authority. Please to enjoy.
Quick methodology note: in order that I not spend the rest of my life working on this rather obsessively researched list, I limited my selections — as I did with the 10 best list — specifically to North American consumer console magazines with national distribution. That means no trade publications, no computer magazines (even if they’re game-specific), no zines or little indie things (which would be totally unfair anyway) and nothing published outside of the United States. Maybe we’ll revisit those another time! On with the show.
10. GamePro Issue 225 – April 2008
Long before Gears of War 2 was actually announced, a struggling GamePro put out this amazing piece of work to try to grab a few unwarranted impulse purchases out of a nothing story. That’s right — there’s absolutely nothing about Gears of War 2 in this issue, because it didn’t exist yet. It would be the equivalent of 1UP updating the home page to say BOBBY KOTICK not DEAD.
