The last time I played the game PUSS! From teamCOIL, it was when the game was in it’s demo stages. It was in that review that the game was said to come out on June 6, 2018. However, the game has now officially released three months later than my first initial review of the game. Since that review was only a review of its demo; I felt that it was only right to play the full version of the game, now that it has been completed, and give my review for it as well. I would also like to take the time to thank teamCOIL for providing me with a free copy of the full version of Puss!
If you are interested in reading the first review for Puss! that I have written. You can do so by clicking on the title here Psychedelic Fun with Puss! From teamCOIL. This will take you to the first review. That way you can compare the first review to the new review.
I will say that Puss! has certainly changed from the three months ago in which I reviewed the game. For starters; the game still does randomize the levels. However, it does appear that some levels do seem to show up in the same spots. Although, the levels are supposedly randomizing; it does seem to be a pattern at least for World 1-1 and 1-2. The levels for those starting two are usually the same exact level from the previous playthrough. From World 1-3 onward it does truly randomize. Even if you remember how to complete the level, its chances are that the level during your next playthrough will be totally different next go around.
The objective of the game is still the same. You must use your mouse to guide your kitty from point A to point B. You must guide them through the mazes for each level without touching the sides of the mazes or running into any obstacles. Touching the sides of the maze for too long will cause you to lose a life. Once you click on your little kitty cat you’re score will start to deplete up until a certain point, in which it will stand still. The faster you complete the maze, the more points you gain for towards the end of the level, which grants you more lives. Once the score has reached a certain level it will stop depleting and stand still, which then if you lose a life you also lose a chunk of your points as well. There isn’t a certain amount of points that you lose at least not that I could see, it just randomly takes a chunk of points from you.
The controls are still simple, you use your mouse to guide the kitten through each of the mazes. The graphics are still gorgeous as well. They did add more levels to the bunch, at least there were levels that I did not encounter during my playthrough of the demo. The music has gone through a pretty big drastic change as well. During the demo, most of the music switch between the ambient style music to an 80’s dance soundtrack. Now the music is a bit more chaotic, but ironically for the game it does work very well. Instead of having a lot of the ambient style music from before; it seems like a lot of the music is either ambient new age mixed with a bIt of ASMR.
In fact, during the “World Complete” screen there is no actual music. It is just a lot of ASMR sounds. From time to time you may hear a faint melody, but it’s definitely ASMR based. Some of the music is pleasant to the ear. While some of the music is a little questionable; but it somehow just manages to work. I’m sure this is also due to the chaotic nature of the game. This is the main reason why the music works for the game. Speaking of the chaotic nature of the game; I will like to take this time to remind you that those who are prone to seizures need to proceed with caution. The game does include flashing lights and other images that could cause a seizure. Even if you have never had a seizure in the past. If you ever start to feel sick or dizzy. Step away from the game and consult your doctor. Remember, your safety always comes first. Due to the nature of the game and its flashing lights and colors, it pulls you in. One of the reasons, I think that Puss! is going to do well is because of the fact when you are playing the game you will constantly ask yourself, “What am I playing?” That’s of course if only you aren’t distracted by how fun the game is.
Something else that was included in the full version of the game, that was hinted in the demo was the ability to change the kitty you take through the maze. As suspected in the demo; there is an option for you to change out the kitty. To do this, you will need to access the game’s menu by hitting the ESC Key. There is a total of seven different kittens you can guide through the maze. They are: A pink (or white) kitten , An orange (or yellow) kitten, A kitty who could be pink (or white) with an orange (or yellow) patch over its left eye, a gray pinkish looking kitten, an ice block kitten, a chocolate covered kitten, and a toast kitten; a kitten who is made of toast (again nothing with this game surprises me.)
I stated in my last article how Puss! reminds me a lot like a game from Adult Swim Games, and I think if you enjoy games from Adult Swim Games, then this game is going to be a great fit for you. Let’s face it the game is completely eccentric, and because it’s eccentric that is what is going to make others want to play it and possibly obsess over it. I wouldn’t be surprise if the game doesn’t develop a cult like following. I strongly believe that as soon as you have tried it you will want to tell others about it. Again, based on how the game plays out.
In the demo they did leave hints towards a leaderboard. I am glad to say that the leaderboard has been added to the game. However, when I had played I was unsure if the leaderboards were working, because the only score it shows is just mine. It does show that you are supposed to be able to see the “Global Leaderboard” and “Friend Leaderboard”, but I hadn’t seen anyone else on the boards. This could simply be a glitch or a bug. I am hoping that this is fixed soon, because I would like to see how I fair against others.
Another feature that wasn’t added before that has now been added are Steam Achievements. There is a total of twenty-seven achievements in the game that can be collected. At the time of the demo there was no indication of whether the achievements would be included, but I am glad to see that the developers did add the achievements to the game. On the other side of the coin, they did not add steam trading cards to the game. Honestly, I don’t think the game needs the trading cards. However, if you are into collecting trading cards, I would recommend requesting them from the developer’s through their steam forum.
Overall, I think that Puss! is still a great game. It has without doubt come a long way since I first cover its demo. I still think that this game is going to be a game that others talk about for years to come. If you haven’t tried it or played it; it is one of those games that as soon as you play it, you will have a hard time walking away from it. Yes, there are still some small issues like the Leaderboards not working properly, but all of that can be fixed with a patch update. If you would like to give Puss! a try for yourself and be your own judge, you can do so by going to Steam and purchasing the game for $9.99 USD. In addition, if you are still not sold on the game, you can still download the demo of Puss! and try it before you buy it.
If you would like to see gameplay footage of the game. I have included a small gameplay video of the game. As always there is no voice over to the video as I have written and in-depth review for the game. Just to reiterate the disclaimer from before :
