Developed by TACS Games and published by Poppy Works, Super Skull Smash GO! 2 Turbo is the sequel to the Playstation Mobile game Super Skull Smash GO! that was available on Playstation Vita back in 2013. Personally, I have never played the first part to the game. However, I was very intrigued by the trailer I saw of the game and because it was on Steam, I thought I would love to give that a try because it looks interesting. Therefore, I would like to take the time to thank Poppy Works and TACS Games for providing me with a free copy of the Steam version of the game, so that I could write this review.
The story of the game is The Evil King is tormenting the villagers (who I have dubbed them the blue men.) You play as their prophet, a pink guy (who I started calling “Turbo”) who is embarking on this adventure to stop The Evil King. In the game Turbo, must collect coins, gems and vanquish The Evil King’s army of skeletons by jumping on their heads and offering the skulls to the altar. The game features a total of thirty-eight levels that spanned across six theme worlds.
One of the things that I do really like about Super Skull Smash Go! 2 Turbo is the graphics and music. I love the fact that they used a 16-bit style with this and the music that accompanies it fits accordingly. This game kind of reminds me of those good old platformers of yester years. Not only does the game look good, but it also provides a good challenge as well. I could easily see this game becoming a game that could be speed ran. In fact, one of the things that I would love to see in the future is the option to have a speed runners mode in the game, because again I could see this being a good contender as a speed runners game. I myself am not a speed runner, but it would still be nice to see that mode incorporated into the game.
Another thing that I should mention is that if you are playing the game on Steam; you are going to want to use the Big Picture mode. Again, for those not familiar with Big Picture mode, it pretty much turns your Steam Client into a console interface. I am mentioning playing this game in Big Picture mode because that is the only way you can exit out of the game. Which leaves me to believe the Super Skull Smash GO! 2 Turbo was originally supposed to only be on PS4 and PSVita . Again, per speculation but I feel that they may have added the Steam Version as a last-minute thing. I only say this because there is no way to exit the game without being in Big Picture mode, as there is no exit option on the title screen and ESC does not get you out of the game. The only other way to exit is to press Alt +F4, which can be tricky if you are running dual monitors and you don’t make sure the game is selected. Ideally, you could also use the alt and tab key and use your mouse to exit out of the game as well.
Speaking of controls; you can use gamepad and keyboard as controls. Another reason I know that the game is ported from Playstation is because the controls they give for gamepad in the game are from the Playstation controller. However, if you are playing in Big Picture mode you can ideally configurate a PS4 controller to your PC to play. If you are playing with a Microsoft XBOX Controller the controls are simple enough to figure out if you have played both systems. If not, you are going to want to play around with the controller to figure out the controls. When it comes to the keyboard controls they are okay. My only thing is that they added to the game’s difficulty and again even if you are playing with keyboard controls, you still must figure out what keys do what. Therefore, in the future for this game; I would love to see that the controls come up based on what controller you have connected to your PC, be it keyboard, an XBOX (which is what I game with) or a Playstation Controller.
If you are someone who enjoys collecting achievements, while you game; you will be happy to know that this game does have the achievements feature. The game offers a total twenty-three achievements that you can collect. The Steam version of the game does not offer trading cards. Therefore, if you are someone who does enjoy collecting trading cards you will not find that feature here just yet. In the past, I have seen games add the trading card feature to their games. Usually, if the demand is high enough for them. So, if you would like trading cards added to the game. I would suggest going to the discussion boards on Steam and letting the developers known, that it is something you want to see.
Overall, when it comes to Super Skull Smash Go! 2 Turbo, I can say that even with some of it’s flaws, (which can easily be address with patches) is still a pretty good game to get. Especially, if you are looking for games that are like those of the old school platformers. If you would like to experience Super Skull Smash Go! 2 Turbo you can do so by purchasing it on Steam, PS4, PSVITA for $9.99 USD.
