Remastered games usually just improve on a cozy idea or concept. Or simply fix the wrongs a core game has presented prior to the resources and or labor. This applies to most modernized consoles/PC ports of many classic games we might recall as hits or cult classics. Super Galaxy Squadron EX I will just call “SGSE” for this review takes a lot of love into the genre it maintains true in the formula then pushes it up to eleven. The game originally with alight back history was produced Nick Clinkscales. He made a kick starter for a awesome cause of Childsplay Charity. Now the game itself seemingly received even more tender loving care. He met the goal reaching beyond the two hundred dollar goal by smacking “$1.263”. This is awesome to me personally. Sure it brings exposure to his work. At the same time goes in a great direction by helping out those who need a great distraction with video games. The sure-cure to sorrowful distraction. The Kickstarter is located here. Take a peak at it and see from his own words the more detailed reasoning of it all from him directly.

Growing up I sat down and played my fair share of shoot-em-ups. Being actually one of my favorite genres in gaming. Hell I will say that I enjoyed Kings Knight on NES. One of the most hated games of the genre. Enough of me rambling lets throw down with SGSE. See what is under the hood. Off the bat you get that well produced storied introduction. It was not too tacky, and voiced pretty well. The story goes as followed: “2438. Eleven years after the First Ceti War. the United Interstellar Federation and a secluded alien race from Tau Ceti are locked in a tense stalemate. Fourteen of the best pilots in the Federation have been recruited to single-handedly win the inevitable second war.“ That is it. That is all that is needed to me personally. However the game does have brief cut scenes for each of the six locations respectfully.

Gameplay wise it is a simple to pick up and play. I ended up turning the difficulty up to max. With hardcore mode. Because I wanted that arcade like challenge. Which at first it lowers you into the madness pretty well. Bullet-hell shmups are notorious for their insane amounts of projectiles all over the place, making you have to dodge and move in a certain pattern to get away from said bullets. Then all hell breaks loose. To help the pain if you so choose to be insane like myself there are over fourteen ships to swim in space with. All varying stats and play styles. So if you find one you like, design wise or practical for your experience then these kind of games you can begin in the games six stage fun fest. The stages themselves are muti-themed consisting of various inspirations of Sci-fi. As you are to expect from most games from the genre. The overall liveliness of each board, or level if you will provides some good depth with the pixel like textures of each location flown through. The Balance between over-baring brutal challenge and fairness plays a good role from the beginning to the end. After completing the game. I felt full-filled. Wanting to try the game it self out with the other thirteen ships and try my luck. Good news for those who wish to try both sides of the fence via versions.

In Closing:

Super Galaxy Squadron EX is more or less a love letter to fans of arcade shoot-em-ups. It does grant some fairness to newer players to the genre. But allows older ones who prefer the challenge to have their cake, and eat it too. See what I did there with that iconic French history reference? Never mind. I am just hungry for cake.

For ten bucks is a little bit high for the length/content of the game. It is not anything innovative in terms of its genre, nor is it trying to boast to be. It is out of the package standard. There is not a single thing wrong with that ether. It plays pretty damn well. With plenty of replay-ability. I was at home with the game from start to finish. Feeling satisfied with the outcome.  For players who would expect or want more from this game would perhaps wait for a sale to purchase. If you are a die hard for shmups like myself, it is worth while now, including both versions of the game.
