When I first came across Sumire (Su-mi-ré) back at the Steam Winter Game Festival in February, I know then that the game was going to be something very beautiful and great. Therefore, when we were asked here at The Daily Gamepad to provide coverage for Sumire, I was more than happy to do so. Therefore, before I get into my review I would just like to take the time to thank GameTomo for providing us here at The Daily Gamepad with a free copy of Sumire, to play on live stream as well as the write this review. I will try my best to be as vague as possible with the story of Sumire, as not to spoil for those who wish to play the game for themselves.
In Sumire, you play as Sumire a young girl who has had a pretty tough time with things going on in her family. One night she has a dream that then sparks out in quite the adventure for Sumire and her companion, who are determined to have the best day ever. Sumire’s story is a very intriguing and emotional story, and I absolutely love the story in the game. Of course, I kept it as vague as possible so that you as the player can experience the story for yourself.
In terms of art style and design Sumire, has to be one of the most beautiful games I have seen in quite some time. Sumire which is Japanese meaning for the word violet has a lot of beautiful colors in it. It makes a lot of sense why Sumire wears the color violet as well –Also, before I go further I do want to take the time to shout out the viewer who came into my live stream to also drop the pronunciation of Sumire and the translation of what her name meant.– So instead of the world of Sumire going straight from left to right as Sumire walks the world has a curve to it which makes it much more unique in my opinion and makes it feel more like she is on an adventure.
The game does offer a chance for Sumire to have little in-game events, which fit perfectly into the story. Some of these events are fetched quests and even playing a card game, just to name a few. However, the biggest thing for me that I loved about Sumire is the fact that it is a game that makes you really think about what you would do in situations and even has a moral lizard that tells you how good or bad you are. I like that Sumire stirs up a lot of emotions and does it very well so that you’re not in one emotion for long.
In terms of controls, you can use both keyboard or controller. For my play-through of the game, I choose to play with a controller as it made it simple for me to pay attention to the game and enjoy the game to its fullest.
Sumire is one of those games that if you enjoy story-rich games, and beautiful stunning art then you should without a doubt check this one out. I would not be surprised if Sumire gets nominated as Indie Game of the Year, or wins an award for best storytelling in a game. Again Sumire is definitely a game you want to pick up and play and I highly recommend it.
If you would like to play Sumire for yourself you can pick up the game on Steam for PC or if you’re more of an on-the-go person, the game is also available on the Nintendo Switch. Both versions of Sumire are going for the Price of $14.99 USD. Once again I would like to thank GameTomo for providing us with a free copy of Sumire to play and review.
