Cryptic recently announced that Champions Online would be switching from a subscription-based model to a free-to-play model. But as for Star Trek Online, their other big MMO on the market today, nothing yet has been decided — and much will depend on how Champions Online’s new business strategy fairs.
“I’m sure people are wondering whether we’ll do it with Star Trek and the question is really how well it does for Champions,” explained Cryptic CEO Jack Emmert to Eurogamer this week (via VG247). “We’re not sold one way or the other with Star Trek yet. If people want Star Trek to go free-to-play then get in and play Champions and help make it a great success, because that would send a strong message.”
However, Emmert also added that, “There are more people than just I on that decision and I can’t begin to say it would be an automatic ‘Yes, we’d do it.'” And as for whether Emmert thinks Champions’ new strategy will be a great success, he seems equally uncertain.
