Developed by Fabraz and published by Headup Games, Slime-san is an Action Adventure Platformer which is played like Super Meat Boy and a lot fun with the twitch integration. I would like to take the time to thank the developer Fabraz and the publisher Headup Games, for providing me with a free copy of the Steam version of the core game to play, so that I could write the review for Slime-san.

The story behind Slime-San is that you are a slime doing whatever a slime does on a slime’s regular day. Suddenly, this gigantic worm starts to chase you and then it swallows you whole.  You then go through a series of levels throughout the creature, trying to avoid his stomach acid as you make your way back through the worm and out of its mouth.

One of the things I want to point out is the music for Slime-san. I absolutely love the music for it. Every time I start up the game, the music causes an adrenaline rush for me and I get very pumped and excited to play the game. The art style although simple, looks good and I love the colors that they used in the game, as it is easy on my eyes. I have a hard time looking at bright backgrounds sometimes, so I love that this is done on a nice blue background and that there aren’t a lot of colors. Lately, I have been a fan of less is more in terms of graphics and this game delivers by using the same three colors throughout.

There  is a total of five worlds inside the worm – Excrement Fields, Organ City, Inner Oasis, Woodland Guts, and Cellular Maze – that each offer fifteen levels that have four stages per level. Each world also additionally has five levels in between each world with it’s last level being a boss level, giving you a total of 100 levels for the game.

The game does have quite a few different modes within the game. There is a normal mode which is what you start off with and once you beaten the game, a second mode opens. On top of that the game does offer a Speed Runner’s mode which in turn has three different options in it. The first option being, No Death Run – If you die you start the entire run over from the beginning.  The second option being, Apple Run, in which you must collect all the apples before you go further, there is no way to skip past a level. The third and final option is New Game Plus – in which all levels have been remixed, as to provide a harder challenge. Of course, the speed run options each come with their own leaderboard as well.

I know that most people are not speed runners and that’s okay, you can still have fun with Slime-san regardless if you are a speed runner or not. Especially, if you are a streamer on Twitch. The game does offer Twitch integration and let me say the Twitch integration just adds to the fun (or frustration) of the game.

With the Twitch integration it pits the chat against the streamer. The chat types into chat in capital letters what they see on the voting board, and this in turns effects the game accordingly. The twitch integration for the game adds the voting board and the chat into the game so you as the streamer can see what is going on with chat, which makes it so much easier for the streamer who likes to follow chat while gaming.  You have the option of turning on infinite voting which does what it says allows for a person to vote infinite amount of times. You also have the option to keep that off. You also have the option to vote on multiple items and each vote effects the game, and once the player gets through the level and an item has reached 100%, the voting board restarts itself. Another, cool feature is if you are a speed runner and want more of a challenge you can turn on the twitch integration; as it works along with the speed runner’s mode as well. Just be warn, that some of the traps are brutal. It does keep points for the player as well as the chat.

One of the things I would love to see with this game, would be for them to somewhere down the line add Mixer Integration as well. However, if this is a game exclusively for Twitch I can understand them not adding the integration. If not then I think it would be interesting to add Mixer Integration to it, so that those who stream on Mixer would be able to play with their viewers as well. I mean as a streamer and viewer, who wouldn’t want to give their viewers a way to interact with them, and who wouldn’t want to sabotage—eh I mean add challenges to their favorite streamer’s game.

In Terms of controls you can use keyboard or gamepad. I will say that this game is best played with the gamepad then the keyboard. The keyboard controls are a little clunky, but honestly, this game is a game that is designed with gamepad in mind. The controls flowed well, and I only recommend playing with keyboard if you want to add yet another challenge to the game yourself.

The game does have a co-op system, but it is local co-op only. So, if you want to co-op with a buddy then there is that option in the game. Along with the co-op for our achievement hunters the game has eighty-five different achievements . The game does also offer trading cards for our  trading card collectors. If that doesn’t satisfy you, and you have to have more. Then you are in luck as Slime-san has two DLC – Slime-San: Blackbird’s Kraken and Slime-San: Sheeple’s Sequel— that are available for the game as well and are included if you purchase the Steam Version of the game. What these DLC add to the game are even more levels and new modes for the speed runner mode, and I highly recommend picking those up as well. I am looking into and forward to playing the DLC for the game as well, because the game is that entertaining.

Overall, when it comes to Slime-san I can say that I highly recommend the game. Whether you are a speed runner, or a streamer, or just a regular video game player, you will not be disappointed with this game. From the many challenges that the games provide by itself, to the superb Twitch Integration. If you are a streamer, I recommend adding it to your community night repertoire as well. If you would like to purchase Slime-San you can do so on the follow platforms: PC: Steam, Fanatical, Humble Bundle, XBONE, or Nintendo Switch for $14.99 USD.

Ready Sets Gaming is a variety streamer on Twitch with a love and passion for indie games. She has been gaming for 30+ years; and feels that a lot of indie games go back to the games that she grew up with and aren't afraid to think outside of the box to make a game. It is because of this thought process that she prefers to play a majority of indie titles, but still likes to play Triple-A titles and Retro games too. She enjoys searching through itch.io platform and looking for games that are stream friendly, and then playing them on stream to get them the exposure they may not be getting. Some of her favorite game genres include Platformers, Puzzlers, Role-Playing and she's recently developed a loved for Shmups.
