Devolver continues work on Croteam’s first-person shooter series with prequel to original game featuring 16-player co-op campaign mode.

After a pair of high-definition overhauls, Devolver Digital is finally ready to lock and load a new Serious Sam. The Austin, Texas-based developer joined with original Serious Sam developer Croteam today to announce a summer release for Serious Sam 3: BFE.

A prequel to the original Serious Sam: The First Encounter, BFE will take place in 22nd century Egypt amidst a collapsing civilization beset by unearthly beasts. When asked what the “BFE” subtitle stood for, a Devolver representative merely said, “For now, it’s just BFE.”

The game will see the return of the series’ signature adversaries like the Headless Kamikaze and Gnaar, as well as new opponents going by names like Scrapjack and Khnum. The gameplay will also see a number of additions, with Sam in particular getting an assortment of new melee moves. Additionally, up to 16 players will be able to play through the game’s cooperative campaign mode at a time.

Serious Sam: BFE is scheduled for release on consoles and PC this summer. For more on Devolver’s previous experience with the series, check out GameSpot’s review of Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter.
