Developer: Cellar Door Games

Where to buy: PSN, Steam

If you have noticed, lately the big topic in gaming is value. With so many games coming out that seem unfinished, gamers are looking for titles that are worth their asking point, and don’t have bugs that completely ruin the fun of the game. If you are in that boat, I have some welcome news. If you have PS+ this month, you can pick up a free title called Rogue Legacy. This game is well worth the asking price, but if its free? C’mon now, that’s an easy question to answer.

Developed by Cellar Door Games, Rogue Legacy is a great metroid-vania style game that has you going into a giant castle and trying to survive as long as possible against rooms full of baddies. Originally only on PC, Cellar Door did a great job at porting the title over to the PlayStation 4. I had originally played Rogue Legacy on the PC, and once I beat it I stopped playing. Looking back at that now, I am mad at myself as the game has so much more hidden and elements that will keep you coming back for more. I’m on New game +6 and I am still playing and enjoying every minute of it.

You can choose between 3 characters at the start of the game, each with their own perks. Some perks are good. Some are bad. Some just are wacky. Examples include: Screen being upside down, black and white screen, upside down screen, no foot pulse, and so many more. You have no control over which perks you have. They are randomly generated. Get used to the word randomly generated, because this game is a master at it. Everything in the game is randomly generated. The castle itself, the character you pick, what is inside treasure chests, monster placement, and more. This could lead to many not liking the game due to not being able to have the same map, however you are able to make it where the castle does not change, by using what is called the Architect.

Game play wise, this is one of the smoothest games I have played for review since Shovel Knight. The controls are just buttery smooth. I never felt like me dying was not my own fault. If you play smart and cautiously, you would really enjoy Rogue Legacy as it rewards you for playing it smart.  That being said, this game can be hard. Very hard. Early in the game you are very weak and have to play smart to keep going and farm gold to upgrade your character. Upgrades include armor, weapon, enchantments, and a manor you can upgrade that houses numerous upgrades.

Rogue-LegacyThis game doesn’t mess around.

The music in the game is phenomenal. It gives you a sense of urgency, making you go quicker, trying to get you to make mistakes. The game was built to defeat you. You cannot let it defeat you. Sound effects sound crisp and detailed, but not over-done. A very nice balance. Sound in this game plays a crucial part of the adventure, as you need to hear when cannons are launching, so you can be prepared to avoid them when rockets come flashing across the screen.

Honestly, I feel I cannot do this game justice. I could sit here and type forever about what this game does right, however this is a title you need to play for yourself. If you have PS+, it is free for the month of February on the PS Vita. However, you are able to download it on both PS3 and PS4 as well. The game plays perfectly on whichever platform you choose, and I cannot suggest Rogue Legacy enough. If you miss the old school days of gaming, Rogue Legacy is a great trip down memory lane, with some great improvements that modern game design allows us.
