They really, really don’t make ’em like they used to. We’re not ragging on modern gaming, let’s be clear – give us a choice between a 3DS and a Virtual Boy, we know what we’ll be leaving half-submerged in the great rubbish tip of history – but it’s hard to deny that, back when polygons were still a great big angular novelty, there was sense of possibility and inventiveness running through games that isn’t as easy to come by today. Genres were still new. Experiments were still being performed.
