Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D

Along with all the other exciting Nintendo 3DS announcements to come out of Nintendo’s big event last night, Capcom also revealed a new Resident Evil game for the handheld called Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. Well, perhaps we should put “new” in quotation mark: As the name implies, the title is actually a collection of the “Mercenaries” bonus missions from Resident Evil 4 and 5, with a few new features thrown in as well.

If you somehow missed out on both Resident Evil 4 and 5, the Mercenaries mode featured bonus missions where players would attempt to kill as many enemies as they could in a specific location in a fixed amount of time. The Mercenaries 3D will feature the same set up, but the press release also promises “brand new modes and well known characters from the series to enrich and extend the Mercenaries experience.” One such new feature is Wi-Fi Connectivity, allowing players to join together in co-op multiplayer over the Internet “regardless of location.”

As for what characters to expect, the first screen shots (via digitalgames.fr) show Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar from RE5, although it wouldn’t be surprising to eventually see RE4’s Leon Kennedy in the game as well. There was no mention of when Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D would be released.
