The so-called Madden Curse has long since penetrated the public consciousness, leading many to believe that players who appear on the cover of a game from the franchise are doomed to injury and failure. Now EA is reportedly taking that concept and turning it into a movie.
According to The Wrap, the film will follow a former Madden champion who comes out of retirement only to discover that he’s on the corner of the latest game’s box. Presumably, he will have to overcome the curse to find glory once again.
The effects of the “curse” are well-documented, as it has apparently affected everyone from former Vikings quarterback Daunte Culpapper to Steelers safety Troy Polamalu. Critics say that the curse is actually the law of averages coming into effect, as players typically appear on the game cover following a career year.
