In addition to playing video games and creating content, I do enjoy reading quite a bit. Depending on how captivating a story is, I can sometimes power through an entire book in about a day or a day and a half. Therefore, when we were approached by the publisher for the book Replay: Memoir of an Uprooted Family, written by the Creator of Prince of Persia; Jordan Mechner, I was very intrigued to see what the book would be like. Let me tell you, I was not ready for the rollercoaster ride, that Replay: Memoir of an Uprooted Family was going to put me on. Before I begin my review of Replay: Memoir of an Uprooted Family, I’d like to thank the author, Jordan Mechner, for sharing his experiences as well as his family’s experiences with the world. I would also like to thank the publisher for reaching out to us here at thedailygamepad.net and providing us with a press copy of the book to read so that I would be able to provide this review for you all.
Please note that this is a book review, and as it is a book review, I am not able to share screenshots of the pages for the book, as I don’t want to infringe on the copyright of the book.
Replay: Memoir of an Uprooted Family, is exactly how I imagine a game developer would write their memoir. This is one of the main reasons that I loved this memoir. First and foremost, the memoir is in a graphic novel format, which kept me engaged because I enjoy graphic novels. I also liked that the story jumped around a lot. It tells the history of not only the Prince of Persia but also how Jorden Mechner’s family came to America and the hurdles they had to overcome. I enjoyed the first-hand account of what his family had done and went through during the time of war, and it put a lot of things into perspective for me. Once I started the book, I had a hard time putting it down because the story and the visuals captivated me and pulled me in. I will admit the book does jump around a lot, but even in doing so, it still flowed very well, so it wasn’t like it jumped around and you couldn’t keep up with the story of what was going on. I enjoyed the book so much that I asked my library to get a copy of the book to add to their catalog so that others could also read this graphic novel.
Overall, if you are someone who enjoys reading or if you enjoy graphic novels, then I highly recommend picking up a copy of Replay: Memoir of an Uprooted Family. The book is available in hardback for those who still enjoy a hard copy of a book via Macmillan, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and BAM – Books A Million. If you are interested in a digital format for the book, it is available as an eBook as well through Amazon Kindle and Barnes and Noble.
