Great gems even down to niche locations are usually a win-win for gamers. Ray Gigant has a smooth flow of a few genres that combine together with a sweet and stylish texture. Dungeon Crawlers are usually noted modern wise to the unknown educated gamer particularly Diablo or Dungeon Siege, or even Victor Vran. It was not until more recently they began a re-coat of polish with other games like Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (one of my personal favorite DS games of all time might I add). Sure if we want to be really detailed of where this kind of game play toke center stage many games such as Shining in the Darkness was another catalyst for this fusion. But then if I were to really go back I would be here all week with research. It is just a refreshing thing to be able to see so many games carry on the legacy of the hybrid genre. Now you ask did this game really push the play dough into every nook and cranny? Lets crack open the container.
The story itself begins as must do. With a cause naturally. The plot is mostly a Visual Novel. Told as such with underline with a episode from a anime. Or a segment. Players will first be introduced to the gripping tale of Ichiya who is a young fighter shrouded in mystery. As the story progresses the player will be introduced to new characters which you later get to experience as the main character. There are a total of 3 different tales told in the perspective of Ichiya, Kyle and Nil. I am try to keep things story wise slim to detail is concerned because I am not for trying to ruin a experience for others. As I am if I think it is worthy, I want those to feel the good feelings I had along the journey as well. Or if the game had something good in that department I will keep hush-hush if you will. Anyway you have to fight beings called Gigants. Gigants are mysterious life-forms that invaded the Earth from space. Various forms and sizes of Gigants have been confirmed, and each take the form of creatures and beasts of legend. The difference – their celestial aura of prominence are gone, and instead, carry the form of the creatures of legend in their “tainted” form.
The game itself is like a modernized comic book straight out of Japan. It has a combat animation that looks so wonderful. At first I assumed the game would just have static enemies with stiff animation. Then the game pulls a full 360 on me. Originally I wanted to enter the game blindly, so it gave me a chance to really grip for everything possible as it came to me in the game. I guess like hearing spoilers for a movie you are about to watch shortly before watching it. The cut scenes look great. Compiling together dazzling artwork. Control wise everything moves on a rail in first person camera when you enter dungeons. After navigating you then encounter enemies of parties or singly. Or more or less to simple terms random encounters. These happen often, but at a pretty steady rate where it was not personally annoying to me. Which some games from yesteryear it was plague quality that it happened so often. Yes, I am looking at you Final Fantasy 9! The game carries each one of the three teens you play as (Ichiya, Kyle, and Nil). Socializing in the game plays a smaller role then most of these sort of games like Persona. It is simply to build a understanding to each character then to actually fortify too much.
In Closing:
Dark beauty and fun gameplay are in Ray Gigant’s corner. I enjoyed my fair share of plenty of first person dungeon crawlers. It is safe to say Vita owners found a new classic for their collection. The story was the best element to me in Ray Gigant. So if you enjoy a good visual novel, solid first person dungeon crawlers. Then get it.
