Over the weekend, Sony announced the new PSP Remaster series, which will see PlayStation Portable games ported to PlayStation 3. These will be enhanced ports of the games; they won’t simply be thrown onto the system as-is.

Remaster titles will be released on Blu-ray — not as downloads, as one might expect. As the title suggests, games will be remastered and rendered in high definition on PS3. Controls will be reworked, as necessary, to function on a PS3 controller, and games may also get any number of other features. A press release lists new add-on content and stereoscopic 3D support as possible additions.

Save data from the original PSP versions of these games will be usable on PS3 so that players can swap between playing on PSP and PS3. The exact process for sharing saves (if there is some new, easier way to do it) was not detailed. Ad-hoc multiplayer will be supported when playing on PS3 through the Ad-Hoc Party mode, which was originally designed to allow online play on PSP for games that would otherwise only feature local multiplayer.
