Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced a price for the PlayStation 4 in Australia. Going forward, a PS4 with a 500GB hard disk drive will now have a recommended retail price of A$479.95 (including GST), down from its previous price of A$549.95.

The new price arrives in the lead-up to the holiday season and shortly after the roll-out of system software update 3.0, which introduced a number of new features including an events app and the ability to stream live to YouTube directly from the console.

The price drop does not affect the PS4 with a 1TB HDD, which still has a recommended retail price of A$549.95.

In addition, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia/New Zealand announced the launch of an AnimeLab app for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The app grants access to AnimeLab, a streaming platform which offers access to anime and simulcasts straight from Japan. The app can be downloaded for free via the PlayStation Network.

Yesterday the NPD released its report revealing that the PS4 was the top-selling console in the United States for the month of September. In addition, the top four of the ten most sold game titles in the United States last month favoured the PS4 as a platform. The holiday season should be an interesting one, with Microsoft lining up several exclusive games including Rise of the Tomb Raider and Halo 5, while Sony will be relying on its new partnership with Activision in Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 to maintain its lead.
