There were a lot of explosions, thumping bass, and impressive price-points shown off at the Sony press conference earlier this evening. However, the one title that perked my interest was one that didn’t get a single mention during the toting of 3D and motion controls. This game is Papo & Yo, a puzzle-adventure game from the new Montreal-based indie studio, Minority.
What caught my attention wasn’t what was on the show floor but from the game’s announcement last week on the official PlayStation Blog. That’s when it became one of the games I wanted to try out this week at E3.
Its inspiration stems from the childhood experiences of the game’s designer, Vander Caballero and his father’s struggles with alcohol abuse. In this case, the father is the character known as Monster, a giant pink rhinoceros-like creature who is friendly and (apparently) helpful to the young boy, Quico, the main controllable character of Papo & Yo. That is until Monster consumes a frog and is thus changed into a dangerous creature. Then it’s up to player’s ingenuity to calm Monster down to his friendly-self through — what I assume to be — a series of puzzle-solving.
