Airplanes

The annoying “please turn off all electronic devices” request made on airplanes during takeoff and landing is a bit outdated— and now, finally, the Federal Aviation Administration is realizing that.

The FAA is expanding its portable devices policy, which it hopes to implement by year’s end. Hit the break for the most important parts:

  • Although you didn’t do it in the first place, you now won’t be “required” to turn off your electronic devices during takeoff and landing— however, you are expected to put your device into airplane mode. If you don’t want to abide, good luck getting cell signal 35,000 feet away from the earth, and keeping your battery full at the same time.
  • You should not use your device during the safety briefing.
  • You are expected to stow away your laptops during takeoff and landing.
  • You are expected to hold your phone or tablet, or stow it in a seat-back pocket during takeoff and landing.
  • Bluetooth devices will be permitted.
  • Phone calls are not allowed.

This is pretty good news, although we also know that most of you rebels out there didn’t follow the rules in the first place…
