Vudu

Movie and TV downloads have been available for a while now through the PlayStation Store, but if you’ve wanted to hand over a few dollars and stream a movie not available through Netflix, PS3 owners have been out of luck. Starting next week, that will become an option with support being added for Vudu, the on-demand movie service.

Vudu has been around for years now and previously offered streaming through dedicated set-top boxes, and more recently, through certain HDTVs and Blu-ray players. It was acquired by Wal-Mart earlier this year.

No subscription will be needed to watch Vudu movies on PS3; you just pay for what you want and start streaming. For a higher price, you can opt for an HD or HDX version of the film (if available). HDX is a format developed by Vudu that it describes as “a groundbreaking video format” allowing you to watch films in 1080p at 24 frames per second.
