Demakes are always interesting, as they allow us to see what more contemporary games would be like had they been made for older platforms. The latest such project is Super Smash Land, a PC demake of Super Smash Bros. designed as if it were for the original Game Boy.
Both a trailer and demo had been released previously, but the full game is now out, reports Piki Geek. The trailer above should give you a good idea of what to expect in terms of gameplay. The controls are fairly simple: movement is set to the arrow keys by default, and Z, X, and Enter take the place of the Game Boy’s A, B, and Start buttons, respectively. The roster includes Mario, Kirby, and Link, as well as a nice surprise in Mega Man — maybe the first bit of good news for Mega Man fans in what seems like ages.
“So, Smash Land has an interesting take in the series,” explained artist and programmer Dan Fornace in an interview with Piki Geek. “I wanted a Smash feel without so many of the things that make Smash feel like Smash (shields, dodges, items, two attack buttons, etc.). What I tried to do was take what appealed to me from the series — spacing and character knowledge — and amplify them in a way that still felt fun.
