PopCap Games’ free-to-play mobile game the “biggest mobile game launch in EA history”; players have logged 25 million hours; Far Future update on the way.

Today during Electronic Arts’ Gamescom press briefing, the company announced that its free-to-play mobile game Plants vs. Zombies 2 has been downloaded more than 16 million times since launch on August 15.

This makes the game the “biggest mobile game launch in EA history,” according to the company. Plants vs. Zombies 2 is currently available for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. It will launch on other platforms later.

Day-one downloads of Plants vs. Zombies 2 were nearly double EA’s previous mobile record, the company said. The game was number 1 in the App Store in 137 countries, EA said.

Plants vs. Zombies 2 players have logged over 25 million hours in the game so far and have faced over 2 billion zombie waves. Gamers have planted 4 billion plants and generated 11 billion suns, EA added.

EA also announced today an all-new “major” content update for Plants vs. Zombies 2 called “Far Future.” No information was provided about when this content will release.
