The following game, “Southfield,” was given to thedailygamepad.net for free by the developers and publishers of the game. I would like to thank the developers and publishers on behalf of thedailygamepad.net for providing a free copy of the game to play for this video and review.

Please keep in mind that this was a demo of the game, so the multiplayer option does not appear to have been implemented yet. You will also notice in the film above that the game had some performance issues. So, in this review, I will not focus as much on performance concerns because this is a demo of the game, and I expect there to be some flaws.

Southfield: a strange blend of crazy physics and farming! You take on the role of a large, energetic Bud that has just sprung from the ground. It’s up to you to guide these clumsy islanders through agricultural life, as no one knows where these charmingly hilarious critters originated. Build your ideal homestead, mix crazy crops for unpredictable results, and play with fun machines. Discover the secrets of an island that is constantly changing as you sway over it by yourself or with up to three pals.

The demo is a pretty lengthy demo with up to 3 hours of gameplay, which I felt was pretty hefty for a demo. When you spawn, you meet Grumps, a tree-like character who walks you through some of the mechanics of the game. As far as teaching you about farming, harvesting, and even building on the homestead. There are two forms of controls: the keyboard and mouse, and then there is the controller. I started with a keyboard and mouse and was happy to find out that there were controller options as well. Between the two, I much preferred the controller over the keyboard and mouse, as the controller controls felt well put together and the keyboard and mouse had a little bit of jank.

Again, not only do you get to farm in this game, but I found harvesting the crops very satisfying. I also like that the game did give you some quests that you could complete, so it wasn’t just you running around and playing. If you are someone like me who enjoys having tasks to do, the demo does provide that. One of the things I do want to touch on more is the building in the game. Building in the game is relatively easy. There were some player errors where I didn’t realize you had to tab over to the material you wanted to build with. So keep in mind that you do need to tab over to the material that you are going to use for building. For me, I would like the game if you only had one material type to automatically go to that material, but now that I know you can tab over, it wasn’t that big of a deal.

I will also admit that I enjoyed the physics of the game, as far as you can make your Bud roll around. One of the things that made me a little sad was when you couldn’t roll your Bud up the mountain. So I think it would be cool to roll them up the mountain. Now, rolling down the mountain is a different story. I also thought that the world in which Southfield takes place was gorgeous and looked very promising.

Overall, if you like games that are based on physics and you enjoy farming simulation games, then I highly recommend giving the demo for Southfield a try. Southfield’s demo will be available to everyone starting February 5, 2024, as it will be taking part in Steam’s Next Fest February Editon, which runs from February 5, 2024, at 1 PM EST [10 AM PST] through February 12, 2024. If you are interested in trying the demo, head over to Southfield’s Steam Page on those dates, and be sure to wishlist the game as well to be notified of its release.
