Philadelphia, PA – February 17, 2026 — Prison City, Philly-area indie publisher and developer Retroware‘s tough-as-nails 8-bit action platformer, is now available to pre-order on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch at forever physical publisher Limited Run Games. Priced at $34.99, both versions include the final game on cartridge/disc, a reversible cover, and 3 Crazy Caps.

To celebrate Prison City escaping its stint in the digital slammer and the launch of the new free update, Retroware has released a brand-new deep dive video. Narrated by the studio’s Creative Director, Justin Silverman, the video explores Prison City‘s origins as a love letter to classic 90s NES games and over-the-top VHS-era action cinema, showcases its pumping chiptune soundtrack composed by Matt Creamer, and highlights the new modes and features introduced in Version 1.0.4.0. It also examines the undeniable health benefits of processed pork cylinders. Check it out below.

Originally released digitally in 2023 on consoles and Steam, Prison City has continued to evolve thanks to community feedback and ongoing support. The newly launched Version 1.0.4.0 update introduces significant enhancements, including:

  • New mobility options, allowing Hal to jump mid-slide and attack while sliding
  • New combat options, including a powerful Special Attack using his chakram, activated via directional input
  • A remixed version of DCP Headquarters (DCP2), now available in two formats: COMPACT (default on Easy and Modern) and SPRAWLING (the original gauntlet for veteran players)
  • New mini-game variants in Bomber Mode
  • Numerous tweaks and bug fixes, plus streamlined input switching on any desired key or controller press

Inspired by Escape from New York and 8-bit classics like Shatterhand and Power Blade, Prison City throws players into the crime-infested city of Detroit after it’s been transformed into a sprawling mega-prison. When a group of Techno-Terrorists seizes control of the crumbling metropolis, ex-cop Hal Bruzer is called back from retirement by his mentor, “The Chief,” to bring them down and restore order—one chakram throw at a time.

Prison City is now available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
