If Metroid-vanias, Luchador masks, and brawler action sounds like a combination for a great indie release, you’re on the ball. Those are just a few examples of what Drinkbox is doing “right” with there latest scheduled release, Guacamelee.

Drop in/out co-op makes for some great fun and hilarious antics while platforming through its open and seamless world. The ability to transform into a chicken to reach them tiny spaces seems to be one of many, along with a great mechanic that is reminiscent of Ikaruga.

This “Ikaruga mechanic” places platforms and enemies on 2 planes of existence, forcing the player to swap between planes in order to traverse Guacamelee’s interesting landscapes, or clear an area of enemies. Drinkbox has a genuinely charming and interesting game on their hands, that by my guess, looks to be a worthy addition to the download space.  My time with it, while brief, was enjoyable and has now garnered my attention.

Expect the game Summer 2012, on PS3 and 360.
