At least in Europe, Sony plans to release two models of the NGP: Wi-Fi-only and 3G plus Wi-Fi. In addition to paying for 3G service, those who want to enjoy an Internet connection wherever they are will have to pay a premium for the 3G system. According to a survey sponsored by Ubisoft, that price gap could be $100.
Regarding the price of the 3G model, the survey claims “the retail price of the Sony NGP is expected to be around $350,” Kotaku reports. It then goes on to ask, “How likely would you be to purchase the Sony NGP now that you know this retail price?” If you’re not interested in 3G, the survey suggests the Wi-Fi-only NGP will cost the same as a Nintendo 3DS, $250.
These prices aren’t final until Sony says so. But keeping the new handheld affordable has been on its agenda from the early planning stages, so it’s not hard to believe that Sony would avoid straying too far above the 3DS’ $250 price point.
